Caraway

Carum carvi, commonly known as caraway, is a traditional plant used in various culinary and medicinal practices. It has historical significance in European and Middle Eastern cultures but specific traditional uses for this plant are not well-documented. Scientific evidence suggests that dietary supplementation with garlic-based phytogenic additives containing caraway may improve growth performance and intestinal health in gilts under commercial conditions. Caraway is widely used to treat bloating and flatulence due to its traditional efficacy. A study found that GLN-encapsulated Finnish caraway essential oil demonstrated enhanced antimicrobial activity against bacteria, potentially extending the shelf life of pike fillet. No major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for this plant, though further research is needed to fully understand its potential benefits and applications.
