Chrysopogon zizanioides, commonly known as vetiver grass, is a traditional plant used in various cultural practices across the world. While its specific medicinal uses are not well-documented in traditional medicine, it has shown potential in environmental remediation and agricultural applications. Scientific evidence suggests that this plant can efficiently remove contaminants from water systems, achieving high removal efficiencies for total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). Additionally, extracts from vetiver grass roots have demonstrated antiproliferative activity against colorectal and lung cancer cells in vitro. The plant's root system, along with associated mycorrhizal fungi, can potentially decontaminate heavy metal-contaminated aquatic ecosystems through a process known as Nano-Mycorrhizo-Phyto-Remediation (NMPR). Vetiver grass has also shown adaptive physiological and molecular responses to petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, reducing total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) levels by 85-93%. No major safety issues or recorded drug interactions have been identified for this plant.
