Foeniculum vulgare, commonly known as fennel, is a plant traditionally used in culinary and herbal practices across various cultures. While its use in traditional medicine is not extensively documented, it has been employed for digestive issues, respiratory ailments, and as a carminative to aid digestion. Scientific evidence suggests that aromatherapy massage using fennel seed essential oil may be associated with beneficial effects on anxiety reduction and improvements in well-being and sleep quality; however, the evidence is currently limited and exploratory. Nanoemulsions of Foeniculum vulgare essential oil have shown enhanced antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while sulfur nanoparticles alleviated salt stress effects on fennel by improving physiological and biochemical parameters. Additionally, a 1:1 mixture of anise and fennel essential oils demonstrated high and stable ovicidal activity against houseflies for up to six months. No major safety issues or recorded drug interactions have been identified thus far.
