Gnetum leptostachyum is a plant traditionally used in certain Asian and African herbal medicine systems, though specific uses are not well-documented. Scientific studies have shown that its active compound, isorhapontigenin, exhibits potential as a modulator of several cytochrome P450 enzymes, including CYP3A4, 2C9, and 2D6, in vitro, suggesting possible interactions with drugs metabolized by these enzymes. In vivo studies have demonstrated that isorhapontigenin can reduce airway inflammation and oxidative stress in mouse models of allergic asthma, potentially improving lung function and pathology. Additionally, it has shown promise in reducing infarct volume and neurological deficits following brain injury through activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway, as well as alleviating acute lung injury by modulating Nrf2 signaling. Safety data for Gnetum leptostachyum is currently limited but does not indicate any major issues.
