Leptospermum is a plant genus native to Australia, New Zealand, and some Pacific islands. While traditionally used by indigenous communities for various purposes, specific uses of Leptospermum itself are not well-documented in traditional medicine. Scientific evidence suggests that Manuka honey derived from Leptospermum species may show promise; manuka eye drops demonstrated a trend towards better improvement in dry eye symptoms and reduced conjunctival redness post-cataract surgery compared to sodium hyaluronate, but further research is needed to confirm these findings. A narrative review indicates potential benefits for various craniofacial wounds using Manuka honey, though most evidence comes from case reports and small series. The bioactive constituents of Leptospermum honeys vary across different climate zones in New Zealand, with higher concentrations found in drier regions and greater flower masses observed in areas with high relative humidity. No major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for Leptospermum or its derivatives.
