Kangaroo-Apple

Solanum laciniatum

Solanum laciniatum is a plant traditionally unrecorded for medicinal use. Scientific research has shown that cyanobacteria form symbiotic relationships with S. laciniatum, enhancing cyanophycin accumulation and nitrogen metabolism in both partners. A new biotransformation product, salicyl alcohol-7-O-beta-D-(beta-1,6-D-glucopyranosyl)-gluco-pyranoside, was isolated from cell suspension cultures of the plant. Phylogenetic analysis indicates a close relationship between S. pseudocapsicum and S. laciniatum with other Solanum species. The solasodine content in callus cultures derived from hypocotyls and shoots increased up to 10 times higher than in undifferentiated callus, suggesting potential for bioenhancement. No major safety issues or recorded drug interactions have been identified thus far.
