Nerium oleander, commonly known as the oleander, is a shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. Traditionally, its use in medicine has not been extensively documented; however, it holds significance in various cultural contexts, often appearing in folklore and religious practices. Scientific evidence suggests that Nerium oleander exhibits strong allelopathic activity against weeds at high extract concentrations but shows a lesser impact on crop species. Additionally, combined extracts from Boswellia sacra and Nerium oleander have shown activity against respiratory syncytial virus and other viruses in vitro. Network pharmacology and machine learning indicate potential for inhibiting atherosclerosis by modulating key pathways, though these findings are preliminary. No major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for Nerium oleander. However, due to its toxic nature, handling and use should be approached with caution.
