Leonotis leonurus, also known as lion's ear, is a traditional plant native to southern Africa. Traditionally, its use has not been extensively documented in specific medicinal or ritual practices. Scientific studies have shown that leonurine, a compound found in Leonotis leonurus, modulates TRPA1 and TRPV4 channels, potentially reducing mechanical allodynia in a thalidomide-induced neuropathy model. Additionally, the smoke extract and isolated compounds from this plant demonstrated potential anticonvulsant and anxiolytic activity in zebrafish larvae, highlighting its possible neurological effects. The plant has been included among several psychoactive plants commonly used or abused in southern Africa, alongside other notable species such as Boophone disticha and Datura stramonium. No major safety issues have been recorded for Leonotis leonurus, nor are there any known drug interactions reported at this time.
