Paeony

Paeonia is a traditional medicinal plant with roots in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, it has been used for various conditions such as menstrual cramps and liver disorders, though specific uses vary among different traditions. Scientific evidence suggests that paeonol from Paeonia lactiflora can suppress prostate cancer progression by regulating the miR-145-5p/GOLM1 axis. Additionally, paeoniflorin has shown potential in reducing inflammation associated with osteoarthritis through upregulating SOCS3 expression in macrophages. Extracellular vesicles derived from Paeonia lactiflora have been found to improve diabetic peripheral neuropathy by modulating CCL21/CCR7 signaling and reducing Schwann cell injury and neuroinflammation. Albiflorin, another compound from the plant, has demonstrated multiple pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects, though its oral bioavailability remains a challenge for therapeutic applications. No major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for Paeonia.
