Scarlet sage

Salvia splendens, commonly known as scarlet sage or red salvia, is a plant native to Brazil and widely cultivated for its ornamental value. While traditionally used in some horticultural practices, no specific traditional medicinal uses have been recorded. Scientific evidence suggests that biosynthesized gold nanoparticles using Salvia splendens leaf extract exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer activities; however, the strength of these findings is limited by the scope of current research. The mitochondrial genome of S. splendens has been sequenced, contributing to the understanding of its genetic structure and aiding in species differentiation within the genus Salvia. Additionally, studies indicate that cadmium stress can significantly decrease growth and photosynthetic parameters at higher concentrations. Notably, no major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for this plant.
