Scutellaria is a genus of plants traditionally used in various herbal medicine systems. While specific traditional uses for Scutellaria species are not extensively documented, studies have shown promising results with certain species. For instance, Scutellaria barbata has been investigated for its potential anti-cancer properties, particularly in colorectal and breast cancer models. Scientific evidence suggests that HD-SB treatment can reduce hepatic tumor nodules and suppress epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in both in vivo and in vitro models of colorectal cancer liver metastasis. Additionally, Scutellaria barbata water extract has been found to inhibit breast cancer growth and lung metastasis by inducing ferroptosis and suppressing EMT without causing systemic toxicity. However, the evidence is still preliminary and more research is needed to confirm these findings. No major safety concerns have been recorded for Scutellaria species; however, due to the limited clinical data, further studies are recommended before widespread use. There are currently no reported drug interactions associated with Scutellaria, but as with any herbal supplement, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider to ensure there are no potential interactions or contraindications with existing medications.
