European mistletoe

Viscum album

Viscum album, commonly known as European mistletoe, is a traditional plant used in European and folk medicine. It has been traditionally employed for various conditions but specific uses are not well-documented. Scientific studies have shown that Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) may be more effective than Viscum album extract in enhancing quality of life and reducing symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and nausea in breast cancer patients. However, no significant differences were observed between mistletoe extract and placebo for improving quality of life or body weight in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. In vitro studies indicate that extracts from Viscum album, along with resveratrol and homeopathic mistletoe CH200, can selectively inhibit the viability of osteosarcoma cells across different cell lines, suggesting potential anticancer properties. No major safety issues or drug interactions have been recorded for Viscum album; however, further research is needed to fully understand its effects and applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is European mistletoe?

European mistletoe (Viscum album) is a plant documented in FolkKB's traditional-medicine reference, drawn from sourced literature and cross-checked against the evidence.

What does the scientific evidence say about European mistletoe?

4 sourced findings are recorded for European mistletoe; the strongest carries evidence grade A. For example: Withania somnifera was identified as the most effective substance for enhancing quality of life and reducing fatigue, pain, and nausea in breast cancer patients.

How strong is the evidence for European mistletoe?

The strongest finding for European mistletoe carries evidence grade A — strong evidence. Grades run A (strongest) to D (preliminary or traditional).

Is European mistletoe safe? What are the side effects?

No major safety issues are recorded for European mistletoe in our sources, but the data may be incomplete. Consult a qualified professional before use.

Does European mistletoe interact with medications?

No drug interactions are recorded for European mistletoe in our sources. This does not rule them out — check with a pharmacist.

What are the common names of European mistletoe?

European mistletoe is also known as: Омела белая, gui des feuillus.

Is European mistletoe a proven treatment?

No. FolkKB is informational only. Traditional use and early findings are not proof of efficacy or safety — consult a qualified professional and never self-treat.
